The Audi Q5 is a common sight on Sutton Coldfield's driveways, from Boldmere and Wylde Green to Four Oaks. Many have keyless entry and push-button start, which is convenient day to day but means the car's security rests on electronics that thieves have learned to work around. A CAN-bus immobiliser adds a check of its own that the car's key system can't answer for, and that's what this post is about.
Why it matters here
Sutton Coldfield sits within the West Midlands Police area, which recorded 9.07 vehicle offences per 1,000 people in the year to March 2026 (27,539 offences). That is the second-highest rate of 43 police forces in England and Wales, just behind the Metropolitan Police (ONS police force area data tables, year ending March 2026). Vehicle offences include thefts of and from vehicles and interference.
Electronic methods are a big part of that picture nationally. The government's factsheet on the Crime and Policing Act 2026 cites Crime Survey data showing that signal manipulation was involved in 36% of vehicle thefts (2019 to 2020) (GOV.UK). The Act now makes it an offence to possess or supply electronic devices for vehicle theft.
How keyless Audis are targeted
At a high level, there are three routes: a relay attack, where the signal from a keyless fob is passed on so the car thinks the key is beside it; programming a new key through the diagnostic port; and CAN injection, where fake messages are sent into the car's internal network. None of them needs force. Our guide to keyless car theft and immobilisers explains why a signal-blocking pouch only helps with the first.
The immobilisers we'd consider for a Q5
A CAN-bus immobiliser works independently of the car's own key system. Even when the Q5 believes the right key is present, the engine won't start until the immobiliser is satisfied too.
- Pandora Microbot: authorised by a Bluetooth tag, a PIN on the car's own steering-wheel or dashboard buttons, or both, and your phone can act as the tag. It holds a Thatcham Category 2e immobiliser certificate (TSC741), shows no LED once fitted and needs no subscription. It's the one to choose if your insurer asks for a Thatcham-certified immobiliser.
- CAN-Phantom CP24: British-made in Stafford. You enter a PIN on the car's own buttons and switches, so there's nothing extra on the keyring. CAN-Phantom states openly that it isn't Thatcham-approved.
- Scorpion X-Series: arms itself every time the ignition goes off, and is disarmed by a PIN on the car's buttons or the tag of a paired ScorpionTrack S5 tracker. No app, no subscription, and not Thatcham-approved. Scorpion lists it for cars including hybrids and electric.
Our comparison of the Microbot, CAN-Phantom and X-Series goes through the differences in more detail.
Tracking and immobilisation in one: Deadlock E-TEC
If you'd like a tracker as well, Meta Trak's S5 Deadlock E-TEC combines Thatcham S5 tracking, a driver-recognition tag and DEADLOCK immobilisation: no tag, no start, with a 24/7 Secure Operating Centre behind it. Meta Trak's published subscription is £189.95 a year, or £499.95 for three years.
The E-TEC has its own approved list (version 1.5.2, October 2025), and push-to-start Audi models are on it. It isn't compatible where a vehicle can be put into Drive without pressing the start button, such as the Audi e-tron GT. We check your exact Q5, its year and engine against that list before quoting.
Q5 questions we're asked
Can the dealer or my garage still service the car?
Yes. The Microbot has a service mode you switch on from the Pandora app, the CP24 has a valet PIN for garages and car washes, and the X-Series has a service mode too. You don't need to hand over your own PIN.
My Q5 is a plug-in hybrid. Does that change things?
It can change which systems fit, which is why we confirm by make, model and year. Scorpion lists the X-Series for hybrids and electric cars, and Meta Trak says its trackers work with hybrid and electric vehicles.
Should I choose an immobiliser or a tracker?
An immobiliser stops the car being driven away; a tracker helps get it back. If your insurer has asked for a tracker, the policy wording decides the category. Deadlock E-TEC covers both in one fit where your Q5 is on the list.
Check your Q5
Send us your Q5's model year, engine and registration if you have it, and tell us whether your insurer has asked for anything. We'll confirm what fits and give you a fixed quote before anything is booked. Get a quote, see how we work across Sutton Coldfield, or read more about immobilisers.
