Lexus hybrids such as the RX and NX are a familiar sight on driveways from Edgbaston and Harborne to Erdington and Kings Heath. Many are keyless, push-button cars, and that brings a particular kind of theft risk. Here's what it looks like in Birmingham and what we'd fit to deal with it.
Where the Lexus sits on the theft lists
The Lexus NX is one of the most stolen models in the country. In 2025 it was the 8th most stolen model in the UK, with 951 reported thefts, according to What Car?'s analysis of DVLA data (Fleet News, February 2026).
Locally, parts of the city see a steady flow of vehicle crime. Taking Erdington as an example, 476 vehicle crimes were recorded within a mile of Erdington High Street between August 2025 and July 2026, with the highest month being May 2026, at 58 (police.uk). On police.uk, "vehicle crime" includes thefts of and from vehicles and vehicle interference, so this isn't a count of cars stolen, but it gives a sense of how often vehicles are targeted in a residential part of the city.
How keyless Lexus models are targeted
We keep this high level. The methods used against keyless SUVs generally fall into three groups:
- Relay attacks, where the signal from a key inside the house is passed to the car.
- CAN injection, where fake messages are sent into the car's internal network.
- Key programming through the diagnostic port.
What they have in common is that the car is persuaded a real key is present. West Midlands Police's advice on preventing car and vehicle theft covers everyday steps such as signal-blocking pouches, which are worth using. A pouch helps against relay attacks, but not against the other two, because they don't need your key. Our keyless car theft guide explains why.
What we'd fit to a Lexus RX or NX
An aftermarket immobiliser adds a check the thief can't pass, because it doesn't depend on the car's own key system. These are the three we'd usually discuss with a Lexus owner.
Pandora Microbot
The Pandora Microbot is a compact CAN-bus immobiliser with a Thatcham Category 2e certificate. You choose how to authorise: a Bluetooth tag, a PIN on the car's own steering-wheel or dashboard buttons, or both. There's no subscription, no LED once fitted, and service mode in the app for garage visits. It's the one we'd point to if your insurer asks for a Thatcham-certified immobiliser.
CAN-Phantom CP24
The CAN-Phantom CP24 is made in Britain and authorised by a PIN on the car's own buttons and switches, so there's nothing extra on your keyring. It has a valet PIN for garages and car washes, and CAN-Phantom says most fits take under two hours. It isn't Thatcham-approved, which CAN-Phantom states openly.
Pandora Storm
The Pandora Storm is a Thatcham Category 2 immobiliser that cuts at least two circuits the car needs to run. It's authorised by a 128-bit Bluetooth tag, a secret code on the car's buttons, or the Pandora Connect app. Pandora designs it to be built on later, with alarm sensors, tracking and remote start, so it suits owners who may want more in future.
We don't fit Pandora's vehicle-specific packages, so these are the standard systems, each checked against your exact model before we quote. The Microbot vs CAN-Phantom vs X-Series guide compares the main options in more depth.
Lexus questions
My Lexus is a hybrid. Does that change anything?
It's part of our check. Compatibility depends on the model, year and powertrain, so we confirm your exact car before quoting and tell you straight away if a system isn't right for it.
Is a tag or a PIN better?
It's personal preference. A tag works without you doing anything, as long as it's with you. A PIN means nothing extra to carry. The Microbot lets you use either or both.
Can I still use the Lexus keyless entry?
Yes. The car unlocks as it does now. The immobiliser only steps in at the start, and without authorisation the engine won't run.
Protect your Lexus
Send us your Lexus model, year and registration if you have it, and tell us whether your insurer has asked for anything specific. We'll confirm which systems suit it and give you a fixed quote before anything is booked. We fit at your home, anywhere across the city.
