Toyota RAV4 Immobiliser in Solihull: Guarding Against CAN Theft

Own a Toyota RAV4 or RAV4 hybrid in Solihull? Why it features on most-stolen lists, how CAN injection works at a high level, and the immobilisers we fit.

The Toyota RAV4 is a practical, economical SUV, and in hybrid form it's a familiar sight on driveways around Shirley, Olton and Solihull itself. Unfortunately, it's also a car that thieves keep coming back to. If you own one, it's worth understanding why, and what a CAN-bus immobiliser can add.

The RAV4 on the most-stolen lists

The RAV4 appears near the top of the national theft figures. In 2025 it was the 4th most stolen model in the UK, with 1,348 reported thefts, according to What Car?'s analysis of DVLA data (Fleet News, February 2026). A separate analysis of the same DVLA data, reported in the same article, put Toyota third among the most stolen makes in 2025, replacing Land Rover in that position.

Here in the West Midlands, Toyota has been on the rise for a while. The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner reported in March 2024 that Toyota thefts in the region were up 109% in 2023 (West Midlands PCC). That's an older figure, but it shows the trend didn't arrive overnight.

CAN injection, in plain terms

Modern cars run on an internal network, the CAN bus, that lets the car's systems talk to each other. One method used against cars like the RAV4 is CAN injection: sending fake messages into that network so the car believes a genuine key is present.

This isn't theory. An automotive security researcher documented a UK Toyota RAV4 stolen by CAN injection in July 2022, where fake "key present" messages were sent into the car's internal network. We won't go further than that: the detail isn't something a blog post should spread.

Other routes include relay attacks on keyless entry and key programming through the diagnostic port. The thing to notice is that none of these need your actual key, which is why keeping the key in a signal-blocking pouch helps with relay attacks but not with the rest.

For what it's worth, Toyota UK's own security advice says it is supplying a variety of solutions to deter theft, including tracking and steering locks. An aftermarket immobiliser is a further layer.

Choosing a CAN-bus immobiliser for a RAV4

A CAN-bus immobiliser works independently of the car's key system. Even if the car has been convinced a key is present, the engine still won't start until the immobiliser gets its own authorisation, which injected messages don't provide.

We fit three main options. The right one depends on how you'd like to authorise and what your insurer asks for:

  1. 01Thatcham certification needed? The Pandora Microbot holds a Thatcham Category 2e immobiliser certificate and needs no subscription. You authorise with a Bluetooth tag, a PIN entered on the car's own buttons, or both, and your phone can act as the tag.
  2. 02Nothing extra to carry? The CAN-Phantom CP24 uses a PIN entered on the RAV4's own buttons and switches. It's British-made and has a valet PIN for garages. It isn't Thatcham-approved, and CAN-Phantom says so openly.
  3. 03Nothing to remember? The Scorpion X-Series arms itself every time the ignition goes off. You disarm it with a PIN on the car's buttons, or with the tag of a paired ScorpionTrack S5 tracker. It isn't Thatcham-approved either.

If you want more than immobilisation, the Pandora Storm is a Thatcham Category 2 immobiliser with at least two immobilisation points, built to take alarm sensors and tracking later.

Our guide Microbot vs CAN-Phantom vs X-Series goes through the differences side by side.

RAV4 questions

Does it matter that my RAV4 is a hybrid?

It's one of the things we check. Compatibility depends on the exact model, year and powertrain, so we confirm your car before we quote. Scorpion, for example, lists the X-Series for cars including hybrids and electric vehicles, but we still check each vehicle first.

Will the immobiliser change how I drive?

No. Once you've authorised, with your tag present or your PIN entered, the RAV4 starts and drives as normal.

What if I forget my PIN?

It depends on the system. The X-Series has a separate emergency PIN, and the Microbot can be authorised by its tag or the Pandora app instead, depending on how it's set up.
