For a trader, a stolen Ford Transit is rarely just a stolen van. It's the tools inside, the jobs you can't get to next week, and the hassle of hiring a replacement while the claim goes through. In Birmingham, that risk is higher than almost anywhere else in the country, so it's worth thinking about tracking before you need it.

Van theft in Birmingham, by the numbers

DVLA data obtained under Freedom of Information and analysed by Tempcover shows that the Birmingham postcode area had more van thefts than any other UK postcode area: 1,446 across 2024 and 2025, well ahead of Sheffield (695) and Guildford (577). The same analysis found that the Ford Transit 350 was the most stolen van model, with 1,309 thefts over those two years (Business Motoring, April 2026).

Ford is also the make stolen most in the West Midlands as a whole. The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner reported 2,375 Ford thefts in the force area in 2025, down 19.4% on the year before, but still the highest of any make (West Midlands PCC, May 2026).

How Transits are targeted

Broadly, vans are at risk in two ways. The first is theft of the van itself, using the same electronic methods as cars, such as key programming through the diagnostic port. The second is theft from the van: tools and materials taken while it's parked overnight. A tracker helps most with the first, by getting the van back. It won't stop a break-in on its own, which is where an alarm or immobiliser comes in.

S7 or S5 for a van?

If your insurer has asked for a tracker, the policy wording decides the category. Here's the short version:

  • S7: monitored around the clock by a secure operating centre, which tracks the vehicle and works with the police once you report a theft. No tag to carry, which suits vans driven by more than one person.
  • S5: everything S7 does, plus driver-recognition tags. If the van moves without a tag present, the monitoring centre is alerted straight away.

S5's tag means every driver needs one, which can be a consideration on a shared van. S7 avoids that. Our S5 or S7 guide has more on reading the wording.

The trackers we'd suggest for a Transit

TrackerCategoryMonitoringSubscription, 1 year
Meta Trak S7 ATSS724/7 Secure Operating Centre£119.95
ScorpionTrack S7-ALSS724/7 with police liaison£139
Meta Trak S5 VTSS524/7 Secure Operating Centre£189.95
Meta Trak ShieldNot insurance approvedYou, in the app£75.95

Prices are the manufacturers' published subscriptions; both offer longer terms.

  • Meta Trak S7 ATS is insurance approved, fits any vehicle type and needs no tag. You get live location, tow alerts and battery-disconnect alerts in the app.
  • ScorpionTrack S7-ALS is Thatcham S7 with no tags to carry, and Scorpion lists it for vans. Monthly and lifetime subscriptions are available.
  • Meta Trak S5 VTS adds the driver ID tag if your policy asks for S5. For vans at risk through the diagnostic port, Meta Trak Deadlock PRO adds no-tag-no-start immobilisation and an OBD port lock you control from the app.

Running more than one van

If you run two or three Transits and your insurer hasn't asked for an approved tracker, Meta Trak Shield is worth a look. It's self-monitored: there's no monitoring centre, so movement, tow and battery alerts come straight to your phone, and you contact the police with the live location if needed. Its real strength for a small business is that several vehicles sit on one login, in the app or the web portal.

Shield isn't insurance approved, so it won't satisfy a policy that asks for S5 or S7. You can mix and match, though: an approved tracker on the van the insurer names, and Shield on the rest.

For the van itself, the CAN-Phantom CP24 immobiliser works on 12 V and 24 V vehicles and is authorised by a PIN on the van's own buttons, so it pairs well with a tracker.

Transit tracker questions

Can you fit it at our yard?

Yes. We come to the vans, at a yard, a site or your home, and activate each tracker with you before we leave.

Can Shield go on our other vehicles too?

Meta Trak lists Shield for cars, vans, motorhomes, motorcycles, scooters and ATVs, so a work car or pickup can sit on the same login as the vans. We check each vehicle before we quote.

Will a tracker bring my premium down?

We can't promise that. The insurer's policy wording decides what they ask for and how they treat it. We'll match the tracker to their wording.
