Out past Stafford, towards Eccleshall, Gnosall and the lanes around Stone, a Land Rover Discovery is often parked on a long driveway or in a yard with no streetlight and no neighbours looking on. That's a very different setting from a town-centre car park, and it changes what good security looks like. When a car is out of sight, the question isn't only "can it be stopped?" but "will anyone know if it goes?" That's where a monitored tracker earns its place.
The local picture
For Land Rover, the national trend is encouraging. QuestGates' analysis of DVLA data found Land Rover thefts fell almost 30% in 2025, and Toyota replaced Land Rover in third place among the most stolen makes (Fleet News, February 2026). Fewer thefts nationally is welcome, but it doesn't change what your own insurer asks for, or how exposed a car on a quiet drive is.

How Land Rovers are usually targeted
At a high level, thieves who go after modern premium SUVs tend to use:
- Relay attacks on keyless entry, passing on the fob's signal from inside the house
- Key programming through the car's diagnostic port
- CAN injection, sending false messages into the car's wiring

S5 or S7 for a Discovery?
Your insurer's policy wording decides. Both are Thatcham categories and both are monitored around the clock:
- S7: monitored tracking. If the vehicle is stolen, the monitoring team takes over once you report it.
- S5: everything S7 does, plus a driver-recognition tag on your keyring. If the car moves without a tag present, the monitoring centre is alerted straight away, even at 3am when you're asleep and the car is at the end of a dark drive.

Deadlock combines S5 tracking with immobilisation: without the tag, the engine won't start. Deadlock PRO also locks the car's diagnostic (OBD) port, which you unlock from the app when the car goes in for a service.
